Andean Inspired Knitting
Intermediate to advanced knitting proficiency
Saturday, August 26th
10:00 - 5:00 with Helen Hamann • $130

Lunch and a copy of “Andean Inspired Knits” included
Short Row Shaping & Live Stitch Insertion, Color Weaving, Provisional Cast On, Tubular Bind Off.

We are pleased to introduce you to Helen Hamann, a native of Peru, and internationally known knitwear designer and alpaca enthusiast whose designs have been featured in fashion magazines, mail-order catalogs, on television, and in Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdales. Her new book, Andean Inspired Knits releasing in September will introduce us to her modern collection of designs in soft alpaca.

When Interweave Press called us and said they were getting ready to promote Helen Hamann’s new book and how excited they were about it, that was good enough for us. When talking with Helen, we were even more impressed with her knowledge of alpaca and knitwear design. Here’s a workshop that will teach you the tricks of a master knitter whose designs are sought the world over. Helen’s Short Row Shaping techniques are completely new and fascinating and will open new ideas for shaping to you. This workshop is our treat to the knitter who is looking for inspiration and innovation and beautiful designs for luxury alpaca yarn.

We will have a trunk show from the book and pre-release copies of Andean Inspired Knits. Learn Helen’s innovative techniques and shortcuts before her book is out! Helen’s workshop targets skilled knitters wanting to learn new techniques using alpaca, one of our favorite fibers.

Shockin’ Stockin’s & Fittin’ Mittens
All day, $60 • November 11, 2006
Turn your world topsy-turvy by knitting stockings from the toes UP and mittens from the tips DOWN. Why??? Because it lets you use limited quantities of yarn to their best advantage (leg or cuff length can be for as long as you have yarn to knit), because pattern stitches will be RIGHT-SIDE UP on socks (unless you stand on your head!) and because it’s fun to do things differently! Conventional heel turning as well as special techniques to make both socks and mittens anatomically-shaped (right vs. left) will be practiced in class, resulting in mini-models.

Ethnic Textured Stitches
All day, $60 • December 2, 2006
For all those who were on the waiting list, we’re offering this class again. Textured stitch patterns have been developed in a number of countries to decorate as well as to thicken garments for warmth. We will practice twined or two-ended knitting (Sweden) which resembles fine brocade, the elaborate plaits of traveling stitches (Bavarian), and cabling without a needle (Ireland and Austria/Germany). Learn what little is known about the history of these rich crafts.

Orenburg Shawls
All day, $60 • January 27, 2007
Orenburg shawls, sometimes referred to as Russian shawls, have only recently become known to the Western world, astonishing knitters with their unusual beauty and delicacy. Knit a mini-shawl, learning to work the sawtooth edging at the same time as the body of the shawl. Experiment with incorporating various lace stitches into it as well. At the end of the class students will have learned the knitting basics, as well as information on suitable yarns and blocking information, so that you can then design and knit your own full-sized shawl. Further reference works will be given to pursue more advanced designs.
