Pattern: Being careful not to twist the stitches, join in the round.
Round 1: Purl
Round 2: Knit
Round 3: Purl
Starting with round 4, knit all rounds until hat measures 4” (4.5”, 5”).

Crown shaping:
Divide stitches into 6 equal sections, placing a stitch marker between each section, with a different colored marker at the beginning/end of the round.

Decrease round: *Knit to two stitches before next marker. Knit 2 together. Repeat from the * around.

Next Round: Knit.
Continue alternating between decreasing and knit rounds until you have 42 stitches left on your needles. Change to the double pointed needles when necessary. Decrease every round until 6 stitches remain.

Knit 2 together around. Cut yarn, leaving a 6” tail. Pull tail through remaining stitches, tie off and weave into work.

To make it more fun, try these ideas:
Ruffled edge: (you will need a 24” needle of the same size) cast on 4 times the number of stitches given, join being careful not to twist. Round 1: Knit. Round 2 and 3: K2 together. Continue with pattern, starting with round 4, above.
Stripes: try stripes of many colors of varying widths—this is a great way to use up scraps.

Fuzzy: Knit the first 3 rows with a fuzzy novelty yarns.
Top Knot: Knit a 3 stitch I-cord before cutting yarn at top of hat. Tie it in a knot, or leave it straight.
Tassel: Make an I-cord tassel for the top of the hat.
